Blog #12 - Melbourne Magic

Melbourne Magic

Melbourne was the cherry on the top of my Australia journey. Great friends made, laughs shared, art enjoyed and whole tonne of card games played.

Canberra is weird

This seems to be a fairly universal opinion among people who travelled through the Australian Capital Territory. Even spending a handful of hours there felt like enough to satisfy my intrigue in the city.

Architecturally it is unique and definitely falls into the cool category for someone like myself who enjoys looking at different buildings… it does have a dystopian aura if I am honest. The parliament is a cool building and I am glad that I went out my way to see it.

But man for a capital city its one big road network geared for driving.

Mixing pot Melbourne

Melbourne as a city is a mixing pot of cultures which have ebbed and flowed over the years… you can see the British victorian era influence on the city in a big way in the housing and many of the older buildings, including the parliament and state library which are both gorgeous buildings.

There is still a strong greek community within the city and I was fortunate enough to get to try some sweet treats from the greek part of town and the baklava was to die for.

You can see that the city has recently become a stronghold for the Asian communities in Australia. There was shops and restaurants from all corners of Asia available.

It was amazing to see so many different cultures intertwined in one place.

Thats bullshit

Shithead, Bullshit, Hula, Sevens, Speed and Spoons… if you guessed card games you’d be right! What a laugh we had playing these and turns out that provided you can explain the rules well enough cards are a very unifying thing. Games came from Scotland, England, Germany and South Korea and were a staple every night for most of my time in Melbourne and I’m beyond thankful for this.

This was great way for all of us to get to know each other as well… Fraser, Lars, Jeoung, Sam and Matt were all regulars at the table and we grew into a right little band and I’m glad to have met them all or in Matt’s case see him again.

Friendships through time

I had the pleasure of being shown Melbourne by one of my dads oldest friends… Davie I am eternally grateful for the generosity you showed me, both with your time and the places you took me for dinner. It was lovely to spend time with someone who made me feel like I was at home. To Mary Beth, Lindsey and Scott it was a joy to meet you all and the kindness you showed me made me feel like I was part of the family and I will hold the brief time we spent together very close to my heart.

Davie's generosity with his time allowed him to show me much of the city I wouldn’t have gotten to see without him. A special mention goes to the Mornington Peninsula which was absolutely baltic and frankly getting out the car with just shorts and a t-shirt was a mistake… but hey it was cool to see it.

Melbs mentions

These are things which I feel I would be amiss to not mention about my time in Melbourne so they’re getting tagged onto the end here.

The National Gallery of Victoria is the best art gallery I have ever had the pleasure of going to. It had a huge diversity of art on show from a huge range of history and it was great to see so much great art in 1 place. It would be top of my list for Melbourne recommendations.

The Queen Victoria Market was cool and I really enjoyed wandering around here, even if it was just for a look. The Borek Shop gets a special mention for having such delicious food at the price it did!

This city knows how to do coffee, I don’t think I once had a bad one in my week and bit there. The best bit was that it was all different and I didn’t feel like it was copy paste each time. I am definitely going to miss the coffee.

And of course special mention goes to Lauren, who didn’t subject to me to her feet this time round. I hope to see you again soon my friend.

In a while crocodile

I cant believe how fast Australia blew past, it feels like it shot past in flash. I met many great people who I hope to cross paths with again in the future.

There a great many places and sites which I didn’t get the chance to see this time around and I will be back to see them in the future.

But for now the curtain has closed on Australia and its time to see New Zealand in all its glory.
