Micro blog ay? These will be shorter, snappier pieces where I want to share a thought or two. Enjoy.
Its funny how quickly we find comfort in cities which are not our own. I don’t mean in the conventional way you or I find comfort, but in the micro behaviours we create to adapt to the city which we are in.
I have never really given this a whole lot of thought until I was sat in this cafe, on my last night in Tokyo, but it is something which I have experienced in a number of cities I have visited.
I’ve found myself taking the same route some mornings to go to a familiar 7-eleven to eat breakfast and then plod on towards the first of the days activities. Or how quickly you get into the rhythm of using local transport (regardless of getting lost in the stations at either end). The other common one for me is interacting with people in small ways, in Japan thats a head-nod, similar to the one we’re all so used to at home. Humans are at the end of the day are what makes a city, and when watched through a cafe window in Ningyocho they have made me reflect that while not home, somewhere I work or go to regularly there is comfort to be found in this city.
As I sat here contemplating how to finish off this piece I saw a young couple holding hands and smiling emphatically at each other and without missing a beat my reaction was to smile too. Find little things that give you comfort, the sky, the architecture, the people.
